The Japanese art of healing

     REIKI

What is Reiki?  And how do you say the dratted thing anyhow?  You pronounce it this way—“Ray—kee”—which means, “spiritually guided life energy”.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?  Reiki comes to us from Japan , from Dr. Usui, who lived in the mid-1800’s to the early 20th century.  Supposedly, during a long meditation on a sacred mountain, he received the Reiki symbols in a vision, and ran down the mountain to convey this new healing power to the poor people in Kyoto .

WHAT IS REIKI?  Reiki is energy healing and draws upon the life force (chi or ki) which is all around us.  When one is “attuned” to Reiki—a ritual which places the four Reiki symbols within your aura or bodily energy field—you can pass on this force through your hands to other people.

Traditionally, the practitioner lays her hands on fifteen positions of the client’s body, each one corresponding to a chakra (energy center), and various organs.  The client remains clothed throughout the session.

HOW DOES IT WORK?  When I give Reiki treatments, I make the symbols over my client’s body and on the palms of my hands.  Then I place my hands on the client, usually starting with the four head positions, moving down the front of the body, then onto the client’s back.  Different people experience different sensations: some feel it as a sensation of cold (usually meaning this area of the body REALLY needs healing), a tingling, or a feeling of heat—the most common.

I, as a practitioner, can feel this sensation flowing through my hands into your body, and the intensity of the heat tells me which parts need the most healing.

WHAT IS A SESSION LIKE? A typical session lasts between 45 minutes to an hour, and costs about the same as a massage.  I give treatments either in my sunroom on a massage table (where you can look up through the skylights to the trees and clouds above), or I can come to your house for a treatment there.

When the session is over, people feel: more energy, more relaxed, less stressed, more connected to your body, and often various aches and pains have disappeared.

WHAT DOES REIKI TREAT?  I’ve successfully used Reiki to treat:  Migraines, dental pain, back pain, bursitis, arthritis pain, surgical incisions, depression, fatigue, asthma, digestive disturbances, and more.  I have also worked with some patients undergoing chemotherapy; Reiki is a useful in detoxifying the body and relaxing the patient.  Reiki can also be sent through distance healing to a client unable to be present for a treatment.

MY TRAINING:  I have been trained in the Usui Reiki Method, passed down from the founder of Reiki, Dr. Usui, and transmitted through numerous practitioners to Karen Hurd, Reiki Master, who gave me my attunements.  I am now a level III Reiki Master, also trained in Karuna Reiki, levels 1 & 2.

And the best way to find out what Reiki feels like is to come for a short introductory session to see if you like it.
